While most consider NeXT to be a flop, would Apple have seen the same success if Steve Jobs hadn’t been ousted and if he never went on to launch and “fail” with NeXT?

Much of what we see in OSX today was brought over from NeXT when Apple took Steve Jobs back in ’96.  It just goes to show what we sometimes see to be a failure is actually anything but.
