Difference between website traffic and TARGETED traffic

If I told you I could deliver 1 MILLION hits to your website by next month, what would you say? Well, first of all, you may not believe me, but let’s assume I could. This would be great, right? Well, maybe. One million hits COULD mean a lot of money to you, or it could mean absolutely nothing. It depends on the quality of the traffic and whether or not it is TARGETED.

Website traffic is not important in and of itself. Sounds crazy, right? Not if you understand what targeted traffic is. Targeted traffic represents people who are actually actively seeking what it is your website does or sells. If someone is looking for exactly what you sell and they find it on your website, it is much more likely that they will buy from you. Conversely, if they visit your website for some other reason and are not actively seeking what you do or sell, then that traffic is basically worthless. The trick to make your website profitable then is to get only TARGETED traffic to visit, so, how do you do that?

The key to getting targeted traffic lies in…the KEY words you use! Let me give a quick example:

Let’s say you have a website that sells a device to help alleviate back pain for golfers while they are playing golf. Now, it might seem like a good idea to market your website directly to golfers. After all, the population of golfers is HUGE and simply by using keywords like GOLF, GOLFING, GOLF COURSE and the like will surely get some golfers to visit your site. This tactic may wind up getting you traffic to your website, but not necessarily TARGETED traffic. Instead, you will want to use keywords like GOLFERS WITH BACK PAIN, PAIN ASSOCIATED WITH GOLF, BACK PAIN and other similar terms. The more specific the keywords you target are, the more likely it is you will get people to visit your site who will want the product you offer. Makes sense, right?

Still, many people are stuck in the MORE IS BETTER mentality when it comes to website traffic and they assume that a lot of traffic is a good thing. Remember the example that I gave when I offered you 1 million hits? Well, now that you understand a little more about the difference between website traffic and TARGETED website traffic, here is another scenario for you:

What if I promised you the choice of 1 million hits to your website, OR 1 thousand TARGETED hits to your site? While I can’t guarantee the outcome, I will say that your odds of making some serious money are MUCH higher with the second scenario. targeted traffic will beat random traffic hands down every time. Spending your time trying to build TARGETED traffic will save you time, money, and will greatly increase the chances that your website will be a profitable venture for years to come. Focus on marketing DIRECTLY to people who need EXACTLY what you want if you want to maximize the success of your online ventures.
